The Kauri Story

New Zealand's prehistoric Kauri forests which thrived 50,000 years ago, were preserved under the surface of the north island of New Zealand, buried under a peat swamp by an act of nature at the end of the last Ice Age. They survived the centuries underground in a chemically balanced environment, that has preserved the timber in perfect condition.

Extraction of the logs is time consuming, expensive and technically difficult requiring skilled operators of heavy machinery. Once brought to the surface, extensive studies and radio carbon dating tests by independant international scientific organizations, have proven beyond a doubt, these Kauri forests grew from 30,000 to 50,000 years ago.

Once extracted, milled, and cut, the wood is carefully stacked and stored, ready for shipment to discerning woodworking businesses and woodworkers.

As with all pens of this wood, having been sanded to an effective grit of 2400, the true beauty of this extremely rare wood is revealed and it takes on an iridescent, "lit from within" quality. It changes in your hand as you turn it, not unlike the hologram on a credit card as the colours can seem to change and the grain appears and disappears as you continue to turn.

I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes, but I did and it's amazing!
